Si presenterà la mostra: "MNEMOSYNE - L' Atlante dell' immagini" Museo Pescheria Pesaro .

La mostra attualizza e reinterpreta in chiave contemporanea il testo cult dello storico dell’ Arte Aby Warburg: MNEMOCYNE – L’ Atalante delle immagini. L’opera, mai ultimata, è sempre stata avvolta da un aurea di mistero e fascinazione. 

Sono stati scelti dalla curatrice Camilla Boemio artisti internazionali (Steven Klein, Biorn Melhus, Candice Breitz, Christelle Lheureux, Klaus Thymann, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Gaston Ramirez Feltrin, Tony Oursler, Guido Van Der Werve , Richard Kern), nazionali (Andrea Dojmi, Stefano Graziani, Nico Vascellari, e il gruppo Alterazioni video) e i lavori video (con delle eccezioni fotografiche) più interessanti e, pertinenti al concetto analizzato, degli ultimi anni. Inoltre, presenti anche molte opere inedite tra le quali ricordiamo “Smother” di Luis Gispert e “Romantic delusions” di Jesper Just e, novità italiana, “The Soft Epic, or: Savages of the Pacific Wes”, di Nadia Hironaka e Matthew Suib e “Purified by fire” di Matthew Suib.

Verranno proiettati degli estratti dei video presentati alla mostra .

The exhibition intends reinterpreting and representing in a contemporary view the cult text by art historian Aby Warburg: MNEMOCYNE – the Atlas of images. This piece which was never completed has always been surrounded by an aura of mystery and fascination.

Mnemocyne is a figurative atlas (Bilderatlas) composed of a series of tables assembled with photographic montages of different artworks: examples drawn mostly from the Renaissance period (art works, manuscript pages, playing cards, etc.); but also archaeological finds from Eastern, Greek and Roman antiquity; as well as testimonies of the 20^th-century culture (newspaper clips, labels, postage stamps).

In the Bilderatlas, with about thousand photographs artistically composed and assembled, images are the main focus of attention, as they are a direct way to  represent, to "say”, the world. The image is the place where the impression and memory of events precipitate and condense the most. As they are provided with a primal power of evocation, in their liveliness of expression, images are the main means and drives to convey cultural tradition and social memory, which in some circumstances may be “revived and uploaded”. In the Atlas, the overlapping of images, combined together to weave several thematic threads into relevant cores and details, creates fields of energy and triggers in viewers an open-ended process of interpretation: “images speak” (zum Bild das Wort).

Mnemocyne is therefore a machine, a sort of giant condenser collecting all the energy currents which have animated - and still do today - the memory of Europe. The purpose of the Atlas consists in illustrating the traditional mechanism of themes and figures from antiquity – Eastern and Greek-Roman – to the present day, with special attention paid to the presentation of motions, gestures and stances expressing the whole gamut of emotional excitement (aggression, defence, sacrifice, mourning, melancholy, bliss, triumph etc.). These are Pathosformeln – formula expressing feelings and emotions – directly derived into art forms from ancient models, or simply re-emerging without a direct connection with models, as engram, the spontaneous emerging of human gestural instinct.

Curator Camilla Boemio has chosen international (Steven Klein, Biorn Melhus, Candice Breitz, Christelle Lheureux, Klaus Thymann, Clemens von Wedemeyer, Gaston Ramirez Feltrin, Tony Oursler, Richard Kern, Guido van der Werve), national (Andrea Dojmi, Stefano Graziani, Nico Vascellari,and the group Alterazioni video) artists, together with video works (with photographic exceptions), who are the most interesting and - in connection with the concept being analysed here - most recent. There are also works which have never been exhibited, such as “Smother” by Luis Gispert and “Romantic delusions” by Jesper Just and, new for Italy, “The Soft Epic, or: Savages of the Pacific Wes”, by Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib and“Purified by fire” by Matthew Suib.

La mostra attualizza e reinterpreta in chiave contemporanea il testo cult dello storico dell’ Arte Aby Warburg: MNEMOCYNE – L’ Atlante delle immagini. L’opera, mai ultimata, è sempre stata avvolta da un aurea di mistero e fascinazione .

Mnemocyne è un atlante figurativo (Bilderatlas) composto da una serie di tavole, costituite da montaggi fotografici che assemblano riproduzioni di opere diverse: testimonianze di ambito soprattutto rinascimentale (opere d'arte, pagine di manoscritti, carte da gioco, etc.); ma anche reperti archeologici dell'antichità orientale, greca e romana; e ancora testimonianze della cultura del XX secolo (ritagli di giornale, etichette pubblicitarie, francobolli).

Nel Bilderatlas, che contiene un migliaio di fotografie sapientemente composte e assemblate, le immagini sono oggetto privilegiato di studio in quanto sono un modo immediato di ‘dire il mondo’. L’immagine è il luogo in cui più direttamente precipita e si condensa l'impressione e la memoria degli eventi. Dotate di un primordiale potere energetico di evocazione, in forza della loro vitalità espressiva le immagini costituiscono i principali veicoli e supporti della tradizione culturale e della memoria sociale, che in determinate circostanze può essere “riattivata e scaricata”. Nell'Atlante la giustapposizione di immagini, impaginate in modo da tessere più fili tematici attorno ai nuclei e ai dettagli di maggior rilievo, crea campi di energia e provoca lo spettatore a innescare un processo interpretativo aperto: “la parola all'immagine” (zum Bild das Wort).

Mnemocyne è dunque una macchina, una sorta di gigantesco condensatore in cui si raccolgono tutte le correnti energetiche che hanno animato e ancora animano la memoria dell'Europa. Obiettivo dell’Atlante è illustrare i meccanismi di tradizione di temi e figure dall'antichità – orientale e greco-romana – all’attualità, con particolare riguardo alla ripresa di moti, gesti e posture che esprimono l’intera gamma dell’eccitazione emozionale (l'aggressione, la difesa, il sacrificio, il lutto, la malinconia, l'estasi, il trionfo, etc.). Si tratta di Pathosformeln – formule espressive dell'emozione – dedotte direttamente in forma artistica dai modelli antichi, o anche riemergenti senza diretto collegamento ai modelli, nella forma di engramma, esito spontaneo dell'istinto gestuale umano.

For the show Mnemosyne Klaus Thymann is producing a video installation and 9 c-type prints.

The images (both moving and still) are abstractions over the characters involved in the mythological history of the birth of the nine muses. The visual language created for this project is seen through a contemporary lens and constructed in a forward thinking visual language yet referencing ancient symbolism
