Smother

Luis Gispert è uno degli artisti internazionali più interessanti, vive e lavora a Brooklyn, New York.

Per la prima volta viene presentato il film inedito, in Italia, alla mostra “ Mnemocyne – L’ Atlante dell’ immagini: “Smother”

“Smother”, è un film narrativo sperimentale di ventisei minuti, annunciato come "affascinante" dal New York Times, e descritto in modo superbo per la straordinaria "visione lirica" dalla rivista The New Yorker.

Immerso nel clima degli anni ottanta di Miami, dove Gispert ha trascorso la sua gioventù, il film esplora i ricordi dell'autore, a volte in modo violento, riportando alla memoria incubi e ricordi d'infanzia.

“Smother” non è nostalgico ricordo di quel periodo, ma piuttosto un passato immaginato sulla base di elementi autobiografici. Drifting reali, iper-reale e scenari immaginari, il film segue il saggio ragazzo , di undici anni ,che come lui subisce una serie di dolorose metamorfosi che lo portano a rompere il legame adolescenziale che lo lega in modo prepotente alla madre.

Gispert ha scritto la sceneggiatura con l’ artista Orly Genger e ha collaborato alla colonna sonora con il Miami-based Phoenecia (Joshua Kay & Romulo Del Castillo). Le stelle Steven Bauer da "Scarface" a "Traffico" a Taryn Manning, e "Hustle Flow".

Le grandi fotografie , tratte dal film , enfatizzano questa esplorazione.

In queste opere, Gispert assembla sia una fotografia di paesaggio, con : i tramonti, l'alba, e siti di interesse storico, sia militare .

Un romantico tramonto su un parco industriale è visto attraverso il parabrezza di una casa di replica del veicolo Knight Rider.

La mediazione di questi spazi naturali visti attraverso la cornice di vari intricati fabbricati crea tensione nel rapporto di rendering fotografico tra l’ambiente naturale e quello costruito :creando un'altra prospettiva assimilativa e visionaria.

Luis Gispert is one of the most interesting international artists "Smother" is a film for the first time in Italy in the exhibition "Mnemocyne - The Atlas of the images."

“Smother”, is a 26-minute experimental narrative film, heralded as “riveting”

by the New York Times, and possesses a “ lyrical gripping vision” by The New

Yorker magazine. Bathed in the atmosphere of 1980’s Miami , where Gispert spent

his youth, the film explores the artist’s violent and sometimes twisted childhood

nightmares and memories.

Smother is neither a period piece nor a nostalgic recollection of that era, but

rather an imagined past based on autobiographic elements. Drifting through real,

hyper-real and fictional scenarios, the film follows an 11-year-old boy as he

undergoes a series of painful metamorphosis that ultimately lead him to break the

adolescent bonds that bind him to his overbearing mother. Gispert wrote the script

with artist Orly Genger and collaborated on the soundtrack with the Miami-based

interdisciplinary bass experimentalist Phoenecia (Joshua Kay & Romulo Del

Castillo). It stars Steven Bauer from “Scarface” and “Traffic” and Taryn Manning,

from “Hustle and Flow”.

The large-scale photographs expand on this exploration. In these works, Gispert

positions tropes of landscape photography, such as sunsets, sunrise, and historic

landmarks, from the vantage point of military or highly customized vehicle interiors.

A romantic sunset over an industrial park is seen through the windshield of a

homemade replica of the Knight Rider vehicle. The mediation of these iconic

natural settings through the frame of various intricate fabricated interiors, scaled

almost to life, creates tension in the relationship of photographic renderings of the

natural and manufactured.

Luis Gispert was born in 1972 in New Jersey and raised in Miami , FL. His work was

featured in the 2002 Whitney Biennial and in exhibitions at the Royal Academy of

Art, London ; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe , Germany; and MoCA, Shanghai. Solo exhibitions include Loud Image at the Hood Museum at Dartmouth College and Art Pace, San Antonio , TX and Steromongrel which premiered at the Whitney Museum and traveled to the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. A survey exhibition of his work will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami in 2009. Gispert currently lives and works in Brooklyn NY.
